Photograph of Ben and Sam

Ben and Sam draw out their design on white paper, using marker pens. There are letters, splashes, flashes and a monkey face… They collect supplies of spray paint, grab their breathing masks and head out to the Markfield Project. Here, on some waste ground beside the railway tracks, there are old walls where you're welcome to paint a mural.

The lads tape their design to a patch of bare wall. Using sticks of charcoal, they mark up the wall with bold outlines. They put on their masks to keep out any harmful paint fumes and set to work. First, they go over the outlines with silver-grey paint. Then they fill in the main blocks of background colour. Lighter colours and smaller details come next. They step back from the wall now and then to see how the details look in the whole design.

Soon the finished mural blazes out. A dull old bit of wall by the railway is filled with colour and movement.
