00.00 – 01.10
General introduction to the series.
01.11 – 03.47
We meet Remi, a sixth-form student from South London who is torn between a future career in medicine and a job using French. We see Remi with her family and learn that she passionately wants to break the stereotype of what's expected from a girl from an Afro-Caribbean background.
03.48 – 05.18
Remi talks to life coach David McQueen and careers specialist Ann Duffy about her love of French, and they discuss the kinds of jobs she could do that would use French and other languages.
05.19 – 09.32
For her first challenge, Remi works in a company that runs an online guide to all things French in London. From the moment she arrives, she has to talk in French to everyone. She is given the task of eating in a French restaurant and then writing a review about it in English and French, with a strict deadline.
09.33 – 10.59
With David and Ann, Remi talks about why she would like to be a doctor and they discover that this is really because there aren't many female Afro-Caribbean doctors and she wants to break the mould. They advise her to look at other professions within healthcare too.
11.00 – 15.44
In the second challenge, Remi spends time with a speech and language therapist. She learns all about the job, the pay and prospects, and the entry qualifications, and has to work with a patient with learning difficulties.
15.45 – 19.00
For her third challenge, Remi works with Oxfam to experience working for a charity. Combining a caring job with the opportunity to use languages might be a good solution. She has to lead a working group that has to come up with fundraising ideas for Oxfam.
19.01 – 22.34
In order to find out about what university can offer, Remi travels to Edinburgh University, which has one of the widest ranges of language degrees on offer. She finds out about what is needed to study French here, and then looks at the financial side of being a student. She has to work out a budget to live on as a student that will pay for everything she needs.
22.35 – 22.57
A summary of all Remi's experiences in the programme and her career thoughts so far.
22.58 – 23.55
It's three months later and university applications need to be sent in soon. Remi has given up on all ideas of working in healthcare and now definitely wants to study French at university.
