PROGRAMME 4: NOOR

Noor is a 16-year-old student from west London who is studying for 4 A-levels and is predicted to get very high grades. He works very hard and is very ambitious. Noor has a very busy, noisy home life but still manages to study and has great support from his family. He used to be badly behaved when he was younger, and most of his fiends have dropped out of school, but Noor decided to work hard as a way of improving himself and the lives of his family.

Noor is very politically minded and has lots of ideas of how to improve his local area. He also likes the idea of going into business, and wants help in deciding between these two career areas. Yet Noor has no real idea of the jobs involved in either field and has only a very vague idea of what a business career would mean. His ideas are mainly based on the idea of making lots of money and the images he has seen on television.

Noor meets a life coach and a careers specialist, who set him a series of challenges to help him decide what to do next.

PROGRAMME AIMS

• To illustrate how to make a decision between two options
• To highlight the importance of talking to people who are actually working in the job or on the course that a student is interested in
• To show students the benefits of higher education
• To stress the role of individual careers guidance
• To help students understand the difference between getting a job and having a real vocation they feel passionate about
• To emphasise the need to find out about career options in depth, and to look for a vocation in life and not just a job.
