This programme would be useful for any student group that has to make career decisions soon. It could also be used in the run-up to work experience (or as preparation for a work shadowing day) as it stresses the need to get real experiences in order to make decisions. It could be a great general introduction to a careers programme by illustrating the need to find careers information and to start thinking as early as possible about career ideas.

Before viewing

Discussion questions for small groups or pairs:

• If you had to choose between two career options what could you do to help you decide?
• Why is it important to think about your likes and dislikes and what you are good at before deciding which job you would like to do?
• What do you think a person working in fashion marketing would actually do?
• What do you think a person working as a barrister would actually do at work?

After/during viewing

What might be attractive about working in corporate law and what might be a problem?

Think about the presentation she gives at the corporate law company. How does it compare to the presentation she made in court? Compare the following:

• How she looked
• How well she spoke
• Appropriateness of dress
• Use of technology
• Confidence
• How formal/informal it was
• Enjoyment.

How does she feel about corporate law as a possible future career? Why is this more suited to her than being a barrister?

University life
Clip 4: 19.34 – 22.28

• Opens with David saying, 'We've had a look around and there are a few university courses that might suit.'
• Closes with David saying, 'She's got a few months to think it over and to see if finally her head and her heart can agree.'
