TRICKY BUSINESS 2

PROGRAMME 4: DOHERTY'S JAM

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

00:00 – 04:22

Introduces mentor John Boyle and business owner Fraser Doherty. Describes Fraser's home-made jam business and his ambition to supply supermarkets.

04:23 – 07:49

John warns Fraser about being too ambitious. He advises him to put his supermarket plans on hold and move into commercial production by renting factory downtime.

07:50 – 09:24

Fraser ignores John's advice. He investigates renting downtime but does not proceed as the factory does not have enough time available to produce jam in supermarket quantities.

09:25 – 11:31

A Waitrose buyer contacts Fraser, expresses interest in his jam and invites him to a meeting. Fraser researches his competition, identifies a niche for a new jam and experiments with new recipes. John changes his mind and encourages Fraser to pursue his dream.

11:32 – 20:44

Fraser works on the Waitrose project and lives off his savings. He obtains professionally designed labels, searches out commercial production facilities and organises a test run of his new product. He looks for funding to support commercial production.

20:45 – 23:33

Progress review. Fraser is closer to achieving his dream of supplying jam to supermarkets. If the supermarket deal evaporates, he still has a new product line, better packaging and access to commercial production facilities.
