TEEN TYCOONS
PROGRAMME 6: KAIZ
ACTIVITIES
Guidance
The programme can be used as the focus of a stand-alone lesson, or as a starter for learning about aspects of the business and working world, whether through direct or indirect experience.
These activities support a variety of individual, paired and group work and can be chosen and adapted to suit the needs of the students involved.
The questions and discussion points in 'Before viewing' might better come after viewing if the group is very new to business and enterprise concepts.
Before viewing
Points for discussion and research:
What do these business terms mean?
- Entrepreneur
- Marketing
- Promotion
- Promo-pack
- Turnover
- Break-even
- Concession.
What is the difference between marketing and promotion, costs and prices?
If you don't know, watch out for them while you're watching and try to define them afterwards. Look them up if you still don't know.
What do you already know about running a business? Have you ever tried? What happened? Does anyone among your family and friends run a business? What do you think are the main advantages of running your own business? What are some of the disadvantages?
After viewing
To view 4Learning video clips you will need Windows XP/2000 and Windows Media Player 9, 10 or 11. Unfortunately, the clips are not supported on Macintosh computers.
The video clips may contain a few seconds of extra material at the beginning and end. We have therefore included opening and closing descriptions to help identify the intended scene.
What makes an entrepreneur?
Clip one: 02.34 – 04.10
- Opens with the narrator saying, 'Sarah and Michael waste no time in heading straight to central London to Kaiz.'
- Closes with Michael saying, 'That's when the dream began.'
What personal qualities and skills do Michael and Sarah possess which make them successful entrepreneurs? Think of some key words that describe an entrepreneur. Do they need any formal qualifications? What qualifications do Michael and Sarah have? How might qualifications help someone run a successful business?
[If students have watched other programmes in the Teen Tycoons series, as well as revisiting some of these questions, they could consider whether additional qualities and skills are revealed in this programme.]
Youth versus age
Clip two: 03.42 – 04.47
- Opens with the narrator saying, 'So armed with PR expertise and financial acumen teenagers Michael and Sarah arrive at their location.'
- Closes with Zazel saying, 'It would be good to have their thoughts on our business.'
Discuss whether Michael and Sarah's age is a major factor in their business success? What qualities do young people (under 30) have that give them an advantage in the business world? What qualities can older people contribute to the success of a business? Use the internet to find out the ages of some well-known entrepreneurs. Look at their CVs and decide whether age is a significant factor in entrepreneurship.
Making money
Clip three: 04.46 – 06.11
- Opens with Zazel saying, 'We've got about fifteen different designers here.'
- Closes with Sarah saying, 'They're not even getting half of that on a monthly basis at the moment.'
Sarah says that Kaiz needs a turnover of £8,000 a month to break even. If Zazel sells concessions at £600-per-month to 10 designers, what must the minimum monthly sales from the boutique be for her to make a profit? Remember that she takes only 60% of the total sales.
Imagine that you are setting up a boutique selling fashion items. What would you sell? What costs would you have to cover (items, not actual figures) to keep the shop open from 10am to 6pm, seven days a week?
Functional design
Clip four: 11.15 – 12.54
- Opens with the narrator saying, 'It's almost the end of week one.'
- Closes with Adam saying, 'Why didn't you do it yourself in the first place if you can do it better?'
Why is Michael not impressed with Adam's sign? Which sign did you think was better for Kaiz's shop front? List three things that you liked about your chosen sign. List three things that were bad about the sign you disliked.
Sketch out two signs for a business you would like to run. One should reflect the unique selling point of the business, the other should look good but be unlikely to promote your business well.
Promotion
Clip five: 16.08 – 17.13
- Opens with the narrator saying, 'The plans for the re-launch are under way.'
- Closes with Zazel saying, '…and hopefully we'll be able to get some bookings from it.'
Michael designed a promo-pack for the photographic studio at Kaiz. What information would you expect to find in it if you needed somewhere for a photo shoot? List the different methods that were used to promote Kaiz. What else could Zazel and Dean have done?
Choose a type of business that you might like to run. Plan a promo-pack for it and sketch out designs for some of the items. Think of an appropriate stunt or event to promote your business.
