TEEN TYCOONS

OMNIBUS 2

ACTIVITIES

Guidance

The excerpts in this omnibus focus on the main theme covered in the full programmes. They could be used in a stand-alone activity, or as a follow-up to activities based on one or more of the full programmes. They could help students to revise some of their previous learning, to extend it, or to go into more depth about a particular aspect of business enterprise.

Before using them it would be helpful to look at the programme notes for the programmes covered in this omnibus:

  • Claws & Paws – a mobile pet groomer with too much work
  • Bumbles – a night club that needs to attract new customers
  • Kaiz – a fashion boutique that is facing closure.

After viewing

To view 4Learning video clips you will need Windows XP/2000 and Windows Media Player 9, 10 or 11. Unfortunately, the clips are not supported on Macintosh computers.

The video clips may contain a few seconds of extra material at the beginning and end. We have therefore included opening and closing descriptions to help identify the intended scene.

Claws & Paws

The guidance and complete set of activities for the full programme can be found at Programme 1: Activities.

The following activity (repeated from Programme 1) fits well with the excerpt in this omnibus programme:

Interviewing someone to work for you
Clip two: 10.09 – 11.38

Sharon didn't find interviewing easy. What did she need to find out about someone she wanted to work for her? What skills did she need to use to find out what she wanted to know?

In pairs, role-play the interview, with one person playing Sharon and the other her potential new worker. If you're the interviewer, think of five questions you want to ask to find out what you need to know. If you're the interviewee, think of the qualities, skills and experience you would need to do the job well and persuade Sharon to employ you. When the interview is finished, share the experience with others in the group. What was easy and difficult about it? Sharon – would you have employed this person? Interviewee: would you have accepted the job?

Michael says that Sharon's turnover would increase by £8,000 a year with another person working for her. This wouldn't be clear profit. What costs would be involved?

Bumbles

The guidance and complete set of activities for the full programme can be found at Programme 4: Activities.

The following new activity fits well with the excerpt in this omnibus programme:

Promotion
The Tycoons decided that a salsa night would bring in more young customers. Think of a different kind of theme night that would also bring in young people (aged 18 to 25). Draw up a plan for putting it on. Think of all the things you would need to arrange – music, decorations, staff, food etc.

What is the difference between a poster and a flyer? Design a poster or a flyer to promote your theme night. Make sure it has the minimum amount of text on it while giving all the information needed.

Kaiz

The guidance and complete set of activities for the full programme can be found at Programme 6: Activities.

The following activity (repeated from Programme 6) fits well with the excerpt in this omnibus programme:

Functional design
Clip four: 11.15 – 12.54

  • Opens with the narrator saying, 'It's almost the end of week one.'
  • Closes with Adam saying, 'Why didn't you do it yourself in the first place if you can do it better?'

Why is Michael not impressed with Adam's sign? Which sign did you think was better for Kaiz's shop front? List three things that you liked about your chosen sign. List three things that were bad about the sign you disliked.

Sketch out two signs for a business you would like to run – one should reflect the unique selling point of the business, the other should look good but be unlikely to promote your business well.
