Teens on Trial

Activities

Before viewing

Split the class into two groups of jury members and discuss the following issues, making note of the general views amongst the group:

  1. Discuss how serious you think aggression, bullying and anti-social behaviour are.
  2. Discuss your own experiences of aggression, bullying and anti-social behaviour.
  3. What was the outcome of this anti-social behaviour?
  4. Discuss why you think teenagers behave aggressively or bully others.
  5. Discuss whether you can justify aggressive behaviour.
  6. Discuss how bullying or anti-social behaviour should be punished.
  7. Discuss the best way to stop people behaving anti-socially.
  8. Discuss whether you think ASBOs help to reduce teenagers' anti-social behaviour.

After viewing

As one group compare the views of the two juries before the show and then consider how your views may have been changed by Kay's case.

  1. Discuss why you think Kay has an aggressive streak.
  2. Discuss what course of action should be taken to encourage her to stop behaving in such an anti-social manner.
  3. Discuss whether Kay bows to peer pressure from her friends to be the leader of the group.
  4. Should Kay worry more about getting arrested and imprisoned or injuring someone seriously if she continues with this aggressive behaviour into later life?
  5. Do you think the defence case was strong, would you have defended her differently?
  6. Do you think the prosecution case was strong, would you have prosecuted her differently?
  7. Discuss whether you think your school deals with bullying and aggressive behaviour well.
  8. Has watching Kay's story changed your views on aggressive behaviour and bullying?
