Programme 1: Benji
- the importance of image
- antisocial behaviour
Learners will:
- enhance their understanding of other people's experiences and points of view
- understand better how others see them and how their clothes and lifestyle can lead to misunderstanding
- be motivated to challenge the power of prejudice
Benji is an 18-year-old media student who has never been in trouble with the police but who is often mistaken for somebody who is up to no good, partly because of the clothes he wears and partly because he is part of an MC crew (called Ill Cartel) who perform garage.
The programme follows Benji and his fellow crew members as they try to get a club to let them throw a launch party. Garage is associated with violence and many club promoters won't allow garage acts to perform. They demand that any damage caused to their club must be paid for and Ill Cartel can't afford to do that.
Members of the public are asked what they think antisocial behaviour is. Benji and his friends go out on the streets and point out the antisocial behaviour of the England supporters after they lost to Portugal. However there are no police stopping and searching them or hassling them.
Benji travels to Kingston College every day and there is he out of his territory and feels insecure. One of his tutors talks about culture and image.
Benji is left the last word on what these experiences teach him.
