POWER TO THE PEOPLE

PROGRAMME 2: F TO J

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

00:00 – 00:43

Explains the purpose of the programme.

00:44 – 05:25

F is for fan power. A local radio presenter, Hugh Ferris, describes the myriad of inventive methods that Manchester United fans used to protest against Malcolm Glaser's plans to buy the club. Reveals that an alternative and successful non-league club emerged to continue the protest.

05:26 – 10:24

G is for globalisation. Anti-globalisation protestors and global justice campaigners explain why they take direct action, what they hope to achieve, and the risks that they encounter.

10:25 – 14:26

H is for human rights, including the freedom of expression. Liberty director, Shami Chakrabarti, and peace protesters, Brian Haw and Maya Evans, explain why they think that the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 restricts human rights. Journalist and broadcaster Nick Ferrari challenges this view.

14:27 – 19:36

I is for iconography. Rebekka Kill explains the role of icons in protest campaigns, and how they differ from graffiti. Graffiti artist and former political activist, Arrowfish, talks about his work.

19:37 – 24:10

J is for John and Yoko's 'bed-in'. Describes their 1969 'Bed-in for Peace' and associated protest song 'Give Peace A Chance'. Also features a 'bed-in' protest staged in New Zealand after 9/11.
