Before viewing

The Background information on communication skills will help to identify the areas where this family is failing to communicate effectively.

Before undertaking the It takes time activity, they should read the Background information on fathers, and visit some of the websites listed in Find out more.

Programme-related activities

It takes time
Clip 1: 01:24 – 02:31

What message has Lance been giving to Luke by spending so little time with him? What could Lance have done before now to build a better relationship with Luke? Would you like someone in your life to give you more time? Have you told them what you'd like? Think of one simple way in which that person could fit more time for you into their life – it could be as simple as having a coffee together. Try to make that time together happen if you can.

Watch what you say
In the film we hear Luke's parents call him a waster and a brat. Do you think it's a good idea for them to use this kind of language to Luke's face? What negative effect could it have? Luke says that when his dad calls him a waster, it's true, and makes him think that he's wasting everything he could have had. Can you think of any other ways that Lance could have made Luke reflect on the way he's been behaving?

Do you think that teenagers have the right not to talk to other family members if they don't want to? How would that make other people feel? How could Luke's parents have handled the situation at the dinner table differently, when Luke refused to talk to them?

Showing the love
Clip 2: 14:45 – 15:26

Do you think that parents need to tell their kids that they love them? If you do, what are your reasons? It might be embarrassing to say 'I love you', so how else could parents show that they care? Do you think Lance is right when he thinks that feeling unloved might have contributed to Luke's awful behaviour? What would it do for Luke's confidence if he thought his dad loved him and was proud of something that he'd done?

Watching the film
Who do you think was changed most by seeing the film? How optimistic do you feel about Luke's future? What needs to be different in the family to give him the support he needs? How does Luke need to change?
