Before viewing

In a group or class, brainstorm the following and record responses on a board or paper. Ask students what they associate with:

1. medical care
2. injured people

Briefly discuss what students personally think it would be like. Record their responses.

The film follows Gareth's life from riding motorbikes as a child on the Isle of Man to pursuing a medical career, with his chief interest beingthe concept of bringing hospital care to the patient immediately following an accident. His biggest obstacle is trying to overcome the NHS system in the treatment of patients and waiting times. You may wish to have groups of students focus on the following:

• the concept of pre-hospital medical intervention
• the basics of emergency medicine (ABCs) and 'the golden hour'
• empathy and maintaining composure under high pressure life and death situations

After Viewing

Key Questions:

has the film made students:

• more aware of something?
• think more deeply about some issue/what they want or don't want to do?
• changed their opinion about the profession in any way?

Discuss and compare with their original brainstorm.

Activity (Class or group)

• Practice CPR and resuscitation techniques and basic life-saving procedures.
• Make and compare lists of order of medical action that will improve the patient's chance for survival.
