    1. a range of domestic, industrial and environmental contexts
    2. considering ways in which science is applied in technological developments
    3. considering and evaluating the benefits and drawbacks of scientific and technological developments, including those related to the environment, personal health and quality of life, and those raising ethical issues.

2. Life processes and living things

Knowledge, skills and understanding

  • Variation, inheritance and evolution
  • 3) Students should be taught:
    1. how variation arises from genetic causes, environmental causes, and a combination of both
    2. that sexual reproduction is a source of genetic variation, while asexual reproduction produces clones
    3. that mutation is a source of genetic variation and has a number of causes.
  • Inheritance
  • The basic principles of cloning, selective breeding and genetic engineering

PHSE Key Stage 4

Breadth of study

  • During the key stage, students should be taught the Knowledge, skills and understanding through opportunities to:
    1. consider social and moral dilemmas [for example, young parenthood, genetic engineering, attitudes to the law].
