PROGRAMME 1: LISA
ACTIVITIES
To view 4Learning video clips you will need Windows XP/2000 and Windows Media Player 9, 10 or 11. Unfortunately, the clips are not supported on Macintosh computers.
The video clips may contain a few seconds of extra material at the beginning and end. We have therefore included opening and closing descriptions to help identify the intended scene.
Lisa discusses her relationship with her
parents
Clip 1: 03:40
– 5:00
- In: (Narrator) 'It's clear to Rachel that Lisa is often caught between her parents.'
- Out: (Rachel) 'I can't see why you can't get there.'
What does Lisa hope to gain from working with Rachel? How does she want her parents to change? What are Lisa and her parents going to have to do in order to achieve an improvement in their relationship?
Row between Lisa and her mother
Clip 2: 05:50
– 07:00
- In: (Mother) 'I wouldn't have to make you go if you wasn't rude to me all the time.'
- Out: 'She just stands there and laughs in my face all the time.'
Look at the dialogue between Lisa and her mother. Her mother has just asked her to go and stay with her father.
|
Mother |
I wouldn't have to make you go if you wasn't rude to me all the time. |
|
Lisa |
(Watching loud TV and laughing) |
|
Mother |
Why are you acting like this, Lisa? |
|
Lisa |
Because you get on my nerves. |
|
Mother |
Talking to me like I'm a lump of dirt or one of your school friends. That's alright, is it, for you to do that? |
|
Lisa |
Yeah, 'cos then you'll kick me out so it doesn't matter. (Laughs) |
|
Mother |
It's not funny at all, Lisa. |
|
Lisa |
It is. |
|
Mother |
It isn't funny. |
|
Lisa |
It is. It is. |
|
Mother |
You think it's funny to abuse me? |
|
Lisa |
Yeah! |
|
Mother |
You know, you're such a silly girl, Lisa. I mean, you're just sitting there, laughing. You won't even talk about it. |
|
Lisa |
(Continuing to keep the TV on loud and texting on her mobile phone) |
If this was a dialogue between you and a parent or guardian, how might it end? Work with a friend to alter the dialogue. How could things have been improved between mother and daughter? How could Lisa have helped by altering her actions?
Rachel and Lisa discuss tactics
Clip 3: 16:45
– 17:55
- In: (Rachel) 'What if you went to bed tonight and a miracle happened?'
- Out: 'Could I text you tomorrow and ask how that's going?'
Ask yourself Rachel's question: What if you went to bed tonight and a miracle happened? How would you know that things were different? What would you do differently? What would you say to the people you met? How would you feel? Thinking positively about how things could change is often a way in to changing damaging habits.
Lisa meets the director and cast of The
Producers
Clip 4: 18:45
– 20:00
- In: (Rachel) 'The reason that we hoped to come to meet with the three of you...'
- Out: (dancer) 'I think that will help.'
What do you think of the advice offered to Lisa? Could you use that advice? Note how different Lisa is in this clip. When else does she behave differently to how she behaves with her parents? Why do you think this is? Is there someone in your life who winds you up? Is there someone who makes you feel good about yourself? Supposing you used the 'feel good' behaviour with the person who winds you up? How would things be different?
