The Cutting Club
Nia

Nia is 14. She's smart, articulate and a bit of a rebel.

Life is tough at the moment. She's not getting on that well with her dad. She finds it hard to fit into school and doesn't like the adolescent unit she now attends: 'It's just a bunch of psychiatric nurses trying to get you to talk about stuff you don't want to talk about. It sucks.'

Nia has been blaming the cuts on her arms on the family cat. She only told her dad, Pete, last year when he threatened to put down the cat. In Pete's words: 'It looked a little bit too serious for it to be the cat and she's not really a cat person.'

Nia is like any other teenager, trying to cope with typical teen pressures but underneath it all she's also trying to deal with a family loss.
