| MAGGIE: The start of a new career. My first full day as a photographer's assistant. I felt nervous, but Mr Carter is so nice, I soon felt at ease. I am to be in charge of the portrait side of the business in the studio, while Mr Carter goes out and takes photographs of people going about their work. |

He has already taken pictures of road menders and chimney sweeps and to my amazement, he even has pictures of the match girls working at Bryant and May. Suddenly I was reliving life in the factory and while I was lost in my thoughts, someone came into the shop. Goodness gracious, it was Annie Besant! She wants me to help her write some more articles about Bryant and May. JIM: Maggie Johnson started work today, and I have to admit I feel quite excited about it! I left her to look after the studio while I went out to take some shots, and when I came back, she was getting on like a house on fire with a very grand lady. Turned out it was that Annie Besant who runs the Link. Between them they are all set to expose Bryant and May. Good luck to them, says I. |

SUSAN: More trouble at Bryant and May! The girls have red the new Link article and it's set them talking. Meanwhile Foreman Watkins says Mr Bryant will pay me an extra pound a week for regular information. Sutes me. This is the life! BESSIE: I heard from Maggie. She's got a job at that photographer's. Good for her. I always knew he liked her. I was that glad for Maggie. It was so unfair her getting the sack. Who can have spread them wicked rumours? |
