| MAGGIE: I
have lost my job again! Watkins said I had been sending lies about
the poor working conditions to Mrs Besant. The strange thing is it
was not me, but in a way I wish it had been. There is no proof but
I am sure this is something to do with Susan. As I walked out I
called out again "Remember the matches, girls. Stick together and
we can do it!" |

FOREMAN
WATKINS:
I knew that Johnson was a bad 'un, right from the start. She was the ringleader, according to Susan Bailey. It was her what sent the information to the Link. So I tell Mr Bryant all about it, and he says to sack her. I took great satisfaction in imparting this bit of news to Miss 'Knowall' Johnson, but she just marches off without batting an eyelid. Strewth! I nearly had a riot on my hands. |

SUSAN: Another good day! I told Foreman Watkins that it was Maggie feeding stories to the Link, and he swallered it hook, line and sinker. So that's the end of Maggie Johnson. Good riddance to bad rubbish! As for the others, they still think I'm on their side. Yes, I'm beginning to think that London could sute me very nicely! You're doing well, girl. BESSIE: Maggie's been sacked! Someone's been spreading rumours about her - saying she's the one what's giving stories to the Link. Who'd say a thing like that? It's so unfair. But Maggie went out in style. She held up this bunch of matches. Stick together like this, she said, and they can't break us. Never forget the matches, girls! Well, I won't forget, Maggie. Not never. I was so proud of you today. JIM: Well, well, well! I was just finishing work in the office when there was a knock on the door. Come in, says I, and when I look round, guess what? There she was - that lovely girl from Bryant and May! Seems she needs a job. Well, only too delighted to oblige. Things are looking up, Jim Carter, things are looking up! |
