MAGGIE: This is the beginning of Maggie Johnson's diary. Today, in school, Miss Bates gave me this book and said I should start writing a diary, writing down the things that happen to me and what I think about things. I am not sure where to start so I shall begin with myself. I am 10 years old, and go to Stanton Elementary School. I have long brown hair and I'm in Miss Bates' class. My favourite subject at school is writing. |

I live with my mother in a cottage in a village in the North of England. I have no brothers or sisters. When I'm not at school I try to help Mam out as best I can. Father was took in an accident down the pit and died. I was four years old when this happened. I can remember a few things about him such as his big hands and strong arms and the way he used to carry me over his shoulders. Mam always speaks of him with great affection and misses him something terrible. Anyway, I cannot think of more to say and the candle has nearly burnt down, so I shall stop here. MISS BATES: I found Maggie Johnson finishing her homework after school. What a hard-working girl she is! If all my pupils were like her, I wouldn't have to worry so much about the Inspector's visits. I have a strong feeling that the girl could make something of herself. I gave Maggie an old notebook and told her to start a diary. I wonder what she'll write in it. SUSAN: Boring, boring, boring! I'm really fed up with skool. Just copying those stupid sentences off the blackboard all the time. 'A fool and his money is soon parted'. i ask you. Susan Bailey's got better things to do with herself! Yes, i can't wait to leave and get out into the reel world. One thing's for sure: I'm not going to end up an old maid like Miss Bates. NB: Susan never does learn to spell! |
