MAGGIE:       Inspection Day! When the inspector arrived, we were shaking in our boots. So was Miss Bates. He had big hairy whiskers and looked very scary! He was called Mr Woodhead. The first thing he tested us on was arithmetic and spellings. We were doing well until Jimmy got his answer wrong. He also looked in our books and I felt embarrassed when he said in front of the others that mine was very neat. The Inspection seemed to go on forever and by the time it was finished, Miss Bates was looking quite ill! After he had left, Miss Bates said we had passed. We all cheered. Best of all, we had the afternoon off. Rachel and I spent the rest of the day playing together down by the river.

MISS BATES:     It's over, thank heavens, and we were passed! Inspector Woodhead was very frightening and I was shaking in my shoes, so goodness knows what the children were thinking. Jimmy Atkins was a disaster. But Maggie and her friends made a very good impression. This surely calls for celebration, and I will treat myself to a glass of my best elderflower wine. Or perhaps two!

INSPECTOR:     A pleasant enough day in the country. I was glad to see that the children seemed frightened of me. Fear and instruction go well together. Miss Bates, the teacher, is not entirely to my liking. She went on and on about Art and Beauty and such like. Typical wishy-washy thinking, but she had managed some good results none-the-less. I awarded the school a half-day holiday. One pupil stood out in my eyes. A girl called Maggie Johnson. I would be interested to know what happens to her.

NO ENTRY FOR SUSAN AS SHE HAD LEFT THE SCHOOL BY NOW
