The Mayor and Young People
The mayor is a bit like a local celebrity. They meet important people who come to visit the local area and they represent the area elsewhere. They are generally appointed by the council rather than elected, however there are some exceptions. In 2002 many towns and cities including London and Doncaster asked the local people to vote for their mayors.

What about me?
You probably hear people going on about how youngsters don't care about anything, never help others and hang about the streets all day. As with all political elections, only over 18s can vote.
So, how can under 18s make their views known? Many councils have started to really take an interest in the young people living in their area by setting up youth councils, and others have even elected young mayors. If you have an interest in what's going on locally you should find out what your council does for young people and see how you can make a difference.
Key Points
- The mayor of each area has a ceremonial role.
- In some towns and cities, the mayor is elected by the people. In other areas, the mayor is appointed by the council.
- Many councils have youth assemblies, giving young people a real voice in what's happening locally.
- Some councils even have young mayors who represent young people and are elected by 11–17 year olds. Middlesbrough had the first one.
Reality Bytes: Kingston upon Hull
In a bid to help young people feel part of the world of local politics many councils now take part in local democracy week. In Kingston upon Hull, a youth bus providing advice and information for young people from the local council was available, as well as a question time, where young people could really put the council on the spot.
Interesting Facts
- In Lewisham, London, there were 39 candidates for young mayor. The voter turnout for the young mayor's election was higher than turnout for local elections.
- The first woman mayor in the UK was Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. She was appointed Mayor of Aldeburgh in 1909.
- In Scotland, the role of Lord Provost is similar to that of mayors elsewhere in the UK. Lord Provosts have the same political duties as elected members of Scottish Councils.
Big Question
- Do you think all councils should have young mayors and youth assemblies? Would you get involved?
