In 1948, with the atrocities of World War II and the Holocaust fresh on their minds, the UN ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). In principle the declaration is good, but few nations take it seriously. It's too general, too vague and it's not legally binding. The UK's Human Rights Act 1998 came into force in 2000 and incorporates the European Convention on Human Rights. But what about the rest of the world? |
