Who protects our human rights? The concept of human rights came about when the nations of the world realised something had to be done to prevent governments from pushing their citizens around.

In 1948, with the atrocities of World War II and the Holocaust fresh on their minds, the UN ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

In principle the declaration is good, but few nations take it seriously. It's too general, too vague and it's not legally binding. The UK's Human Rights Act 1998 came into force in 2000 and incorporates the European Convention on Human Rights. But what about the rest of the world?
